Full-Time Optician Needed - Waterloo, ON

The Optician reports to the Optical Services Manager. They are responsible for assisting in the operations of Optical Services at The University of Waterloo, School of Optometry and Vision Science, as well as the Health Sciences Optometry Clinic. The Optician requires a thorough knowledge of all aspects of ordering, fabrication, and dispensing of prescribed ophthalmic appliances. The incumbent must hold and maintain a current Optician license in Ontario.

Optical Services within the School of Optometry has two primary activities: providing educational and clinical services through the Ophthalmic Optics Laboratory and the Optical Services Dispensary. This branch of Optical Services is just one of several clinic areas within the School of Optometry & Vision Science. These clinics provide public patient services as part of the undergraduate optometry program. Essentially, the public clinic operates like a retail space, collecting fees for services and products.

Responsibilities of the Optician

The Optician plays a vital role in every aspect of dispensing prescribed ophthalmic appliances. This includes supervising interns and assisting faculty and staff in the Optical Services area.

Intern Supervision

• Provide clinical instruction and evaluation for interns in Optical Services.

• Verify measurements, frame choice, and adjustments.

• Review and confirm all Visual Eyes system entries and sign files when complete.

• Support interns in using aniseikonic and lens demonstration software along with new technology.

• Process returns for warranty work and manage complimentary orders.

• Maintain a wide range of spectacle options for patients, ensuring low vision needs are met, and that up-to-date frame styles are available.

• Conduct expert edging services to accommodate a one-hour service for patients using existing frames.

• Troubleshoot vision difficulties with patients wearing both new and existing glasses, following up with necessary referrals to the appropriate clinic area.

Administrative Duties

• Delegate and perform clinic upkeep duties.

• Manage frame boards effectively.

• Prepare and review lens quotes for patients.

• Recommend, dispense, and repair eyewear as needed.

• Communicate with new and existing patients, both in person and over the phone, regarding eyewear questions and new products.

• Regularly update price lists.

• Deliver shipments to other areas of the building when required.

  
  

Classroom Instruction

• Deliver lectures on relevant dispensing skills and concepts.

• Meet and discuss the latest lens technologies with representatives from optical companies. This ensures and promotes the use of contemporary technologies among the team.

  
  

Required Qualifications

To perform these duties successfully, the following qualifications are necessary:

• An Ontario Optician’s License is required.

• 5 to 7 years of optical experience is needed, preferably in an academic setting.

• The ability to manage multiple projects while prioritizing responsibilities is critical.

• Previous experience with electronic medical record systems is essential.

• A good understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential.

• Knowledge of an Electronic Medical Record System (EMR), ideally Visual Eyes, is required.

• A solid comprehension of all ophthalmic instruments and equipment is necessary.

• Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are essential at all organizational levels.
