COVID-19-Related Ban on Commercial Evictions Extended

The Ford government today introduced amendments to the Commercial Tenancies Act to extend the ban on the eviction of commercial tenants for non-payment of rent to December 31, 2021. The current ban expired on August 31, 2020 and the proposed amendments are retroactive to September 1. As before, the ban applies only to tenants of landlords that are eligible and that have applied for federal-provincial rent assistance through the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) Program for small businesses. The Ford government has also responded to pressure and has introduced legislation to freeze rent to December 31, 2021 for most rent controlled and non-rent controlled RESIDENTIAL rental housing. The legislation requires approval by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, which should be forthcoming shortly.
